Post-production

I have worked as a sound designer, sound editor, Dolby/3D sound mixer, VO recorder and Audio description creator for projects that go from Video games to Thriller films. The success of some of these projects have been recognised by festivals and institutions such as:

“It was great to be able to bring the podcast and this wonderful band in to record at Bankstock Studios. It was a great experience. We had some fantastic support from staff that day and in particular, Campus Support Technician Cesar Portillo was a great help, very professional and incredibly knowledgeable”

MUSIC PRODUCTION
I have worked as a recording and mixing engineer for projects that go from alternative rock to classical music. Production was considered superior among artists and producers, as songs were used on talent showcase for securing new projects
About

Cesar Portillo is a sound artist and engineer with a background in music, acoustics and post-production. After graduating from Middlesex University with a degree in sound engineering, Cesar is now innovating and implementing 3D immersive sound features through international, award-winning film productions.
Initially dividing his time between being a public speaker at conferences to promote accessibility and building a client base for freelance recording, mixing, mastering and live work, Portillo moved to full-time engineering in 2017.
“Sound not only feeds our hearing and imagination but also our immersion”, Cesar is a strong believer that audio-visual mediums should be accessible to all audiences. His recent work embraces inclusive sound design approaches using sound spatialisation, auditory perception and functional sounds to make visual stories accessible and experiential for all audiences; transcending the current limitations of basic accessibility methods.
WHAT I DO

Assest creation
I map out, listen, and see the potential of each project to create a general plan for the audio and music content. Taking the time to design techniques allows me to connect audiences with musical and sound effects pieces that vary from classical and contemporary to electronic and experimental approaches.
Mixing and Mastering
Proper mixing allows each project to enjoy the sensation of height all around the audience. In the process, I enhance a source's volume level, frequency content, dynamics and position on the following aspects:
-
Stereo to mixing of multiple speaker arrays such as 5.1, 7.1 and more
-
Speech, Ambience, SFX, and music mixing
-
Multitrack mixing and mastering of songs and albums from any genre.
Sound Design
Sound is half the picture, but it is also the heart of the experience. Each note, each step and every sound is carefully created and edited for each project. Either synthesised or field recorded, I always aim at creating the harmony between visual, sound and music in order for audio to bring the proper aesthetic for each project.
Location Recording
From voice acting direction to field recording, foley work to audiobooks. Each project is its own world with its own set of challenges and needs, that’s what makes this work so exciting. I love working creatively as a audiobook producer sound recordist or fulfilling any live audio related role with the development team to solve challenges in the most interesting and logistical way.
Immersive sound
Combined with stunning visuals, 3D audio delivers the most powerful entertainment option for each project. I make sure each sound triggers that feeling of being "in the moment" by implementing:
-
Binaural sound recording techniques
-
3D audio spatial mixes
-
Loudspeaker array design/setup
And More...
From accessibility for the blind and partially sighted to research and development plans, I am always willing to help and overcome the challenges of each project. I fully engage with each project, which allows me to explore the potential to develop it into a new experience for its audience. Recording music in binaural, turning a film into an audio film or making a game accessible through sound design. Everything with sound and music is possible!

"Sound more than feeding our hearing and imagination, it also feeds our immersion in audio-visual mediums"
